Universidade do Minho
Founded in 1973, the University of Minho received its first students in the academic year of 1975/76. Today, the University is renowned for the competence and quality of its professors, for its excellence in research, for its wide range of graduate and postgraduate programs, and for its high level of interaction with other institutions.
For these reasons, UMinho is a central agent in the region, an important national reference and a recognized partner in the European and global panorama. Located in the north of Portugal, the University has a campus in the city of Braga and another in the city of Guimarães.
UMinho has a set of infrastructures and services to support students and education, which meet the most diverse needs of students. From libraries and computer labs, to the access to a broadband wireless network and to reprographies, banks, bookstores, bars, canteens and restaurants with very affordable prices, UMinho students find everything they need from 8am to 10pm.
The two university campuses, one in Braga and another in Guimarães, have a total area of 74,000 m2, including two general libraries (in Braga and Guimarães) with about 300,000 books and 600 reading places; 31 specialized libraries (with more than 100,000 books); a Classical Library (with more than 300,000 books from the year 1450 to 1900); and 16,750 scientific journals accessible through the b-on Digital Library. They also have three sports pavilions, three canteens (4000 meals/hour), snack bar, two grills, a restaurant and 14 bars.
The number of beds available in the four residences is quite high (827 beds in Braga and 482 in Guimarães), these spaces having all the necessary conditions for the academic success and well-being of the students, namely wireless broadband Internet, bars and canteens, study and social rooms, laundry, etc.
